System Restore allows you to restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.

For example:
You have just installed your new webcam but somehow managed to install the drivers for windows XP on to your windows 7 PC,  This is causing the computer to crash and and randomly BSOD on boot up!! I would consider this to be a good enough reason to use system restore.

If your computer will not load into windows (aka it keeps crashing) then you will need to enter safemode before starting the system restore.

  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine first starts it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine. When it is finished press the F8 key several times.
  • You will now be presented with a DOS menu.
  • Select the option for Safe Mode

Once you are in Windows or Safemode you will need to do the following.

  • Open System Restore by clicking the Start button .  In the search box, type System Restore, then click System Restore.

  • Select the restore point that you know last worked, either by the date or the last application you installed before you broke the computer
  • after a few minutes the computer should restart and then continue the restore a pop up box will let you know if it completed correctly.

System Restore can also be used to revert your computer to a time before you got infected with a virus, basically it will remove a virus or maleware infection by restoring to a state before infection. ( you must be sure that you run a full scan after because the infected files might still exist on the system even if they are no longer installed.)

good luck, if you need any help just ask in the comments section below.
