Using Scheduling in Windows 7 to Shut Down Your PC Automatically - this can also be used to perform a load of other tasks also.

  1. Click start and type "scheduled tasks" then click the item in the search results.
  2. In the Actions pane on the right, click "Create Basic Task"
  3. Enter a name for task, such as "power down" you can also include an optional description if your like with more details.
  4. On the task trigger page, select when you want the event to trigger, for example weekly and press Next.
  5. enter a start date and time that you want the task to first begin
  6. On the action page, select "Start a Program" and press the Next button
  7. Program/script field, type:  %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE
  8. Press the Next button to finish

this is a fairly basic intro to Scheduled tasks, however with luck it has given you enough info to be confident to create more advanced automated tasks - such as pop up message upon log in and so forth
